William Fry solicitors are organising a briefing around World IP Day
on the evening of May 4th next and are looking to attract graduates
(or soon to be graduates) who have a particular interest in the area

Daniel Archambault, a researcher at Clique, is our guest lecturer. Daniel's lecture will be a primer on data visualisation - starting with the basics of how the human mind absorbs visual information, moving through the different data visualisation models and concluding with real-world applications.

Clique is a joint academic and industry research initiative focused on the research challenges in the analysis, modelling, visualisation and understanding of social and biological networks.a Science Foundation Ireland funded (SFI) Strategic Research Cluster focused on graph and network analysis and visualisation.

Clique is housed within UCD's Complex and Adaptive Systems Laboratory (CASL) (http://www.ucd.ie/casl).

In his current role as Compete & Open Source Lead, Liam is part of the Sales and Marketing/Developer Platform Evangelism (DPE) team building relationships with the Open Source community in Ireland and identifying what key competitors to Microsoft are delivering to Irish customers and partners. Deferral of Exams/Personal Circumstances

Folks

Before you sit your exams you need to make sure you are familiar
with the DIT general assessment regulations (available at http://www.dit.ie/services/academicregistrar/student-assessment-regulations/general/)
and the programme document (available online at http://library.dit.ie search for DT210)

If you cannot attend an exam and know in advance (e.g. work commitments) you
need to do the following:
1. Request a deferral form from the examinations office
2. Complete the deferral form and return with documentary evidence
to support your reason to myself or Damian Gordon

All deferral requests are considered by the head of department and permitted/refused
at their discretion. It is VERY important that you submit some evidence with
your request.

If you are ill in the run up to an exam or on the day of an exam or any circumstances
happen which mean you cannot make the exam or feel you don't do well,
you need to submit a Personal Circumstances Form (available at
http://www.dit.ie/services/academicregistrar/student-assessment-regulations/general/)
and return it to the examinations office.
You must include a Professional Opinion Form with your circumstances.

Where you have submitted a personal circumstances it will be considered when the
examination board meets to consider your result. It will be treated as private and
discussed only with the programme mentor, programme chair, examinations officer
and chair of the examination board.

the exams office this afternoon and will try to get them to you
over the next 3 days.

I will call into the various classes today if possible, tomorrow and Wednesday
or arrange for the relevant lecturer to take the letters for the people in
their class.

If your class does not go ahead and the college is open I will be in my office
@ 5.45 tonight Monday (KE-2-001 room 201 on the second floor)

If you can't make it in for class this week don't worry the exams office
will post whatever I haven't distributed by Thursday so you should get

Case Study Presentation - 04 Dec, 2010

The final Case Study session for this semester is on Saturday morning at 11AM in KE3-008.

Our guest speaker is Heather James. Heather currently works for Acquia.com, the company founded by Drupal creator Dries Buytaert. Heather recently ran Ireland's DrupalCamp in Trinity College (http://www.drupalcampireland.org/).

Heather will be discussing Drupal, the open-source content management system. She will also be doing a side-by-side comparison with an a comparable system and showcasing a new KM system her company created. Finally, Heather will be demonstrating a new web tool for which you will need your laptops and DIT wifi login (please have laptops fully charged as there are very few plugs in the room).

The groupwork topic for the afternoon session will be on Content Management Systems, intranets, portals, publishing platforms, wikis, blogs, etc.

Weather: currently DIT Kevin Street is scheduled to be open on Saturday morning. Heather is taking the train from Sligo so she should be able to make it. If conditions deteriorate significantly, if the college is closed or if the trains are stopped the session will be postponed. Please check your email on Saturday morning for notifications. Dublin Computational Linguistics Research Seminar

--- Title:
Cross-Cultural Assessment of Automatically Generated Multimodal
Referring Expressions in a Virtual World.

--- Abstract
This talk presents a cross-cultural evaluation of an algorithm for
generating multimodal referring expressions to be produced by embodied
conversational agents in a virtual world. The algorithm employs a cost
function to implement general principles of
human motor control and cooperativity in dialogues that can be
parametrised so as to vary the precision of the pointing gestures and
the amount of linguistic information included in the referring
expressions. The study evaluated how native speakers of English and
Japanese perceived three different algorithmic outputs for multimodal
referring behaviour. Results show differences between English- and
Japanese-speaking subjects with respect to their preferences for types
of multimodal referring expressions. In the talk these differences are
related to matters of understandability, human-likeness and
culture-specific social practices. Methodological issues arising from
the translation and localisation of the materials used in the study as
well as its background and preparations are also addressed.

This research is supported by the Science Foundation Ireland (Grant
07/CE/I1142) as part of the Centre for Next Generation Localisation
(www.cngl.ie) at Trinity College Dublin.

KEYWORDS: generating referring expressions, multimodality, virtual
worlds, realisation of referring expressions, dialogue, translation,
cross-cultural differences, social practices.

"Taking Small steps into the Open source community" - Laura Czajkowski
Laura Czajkowski, has been involved in the open source community in one way or another for the last 10 years. When in UL she studied Computer Systems and got involved with the Computer Society skynet and ran her first major conference. Since then she's gotten involved in the Ubuntu community here in Ireland and also internationally. For the past 4 years she has worked in Software Testing and documentation and is now moving to the UK to pursue a career in Open Source Advocacy as a project manager in Marketing.

"Open Source and you. All possibilities" - Andrea Magnorsky
Andrea Magnorsky is a professional software developer and has accrued many years of experience building solid applications. Looking for ways to improve code she came across Rails and the Castle stack, as well as many other open source frameworks Andrea is heavily involved in the organisation of Alt Net in Dublin.

"How open source software affects your business model" - Ana Nelson
Ana Nelson has a Ph.D in economics and currently works in financial
services as an analyst and software/systems developer. She has written
several open source projects and contributed to many more, and uses open
source every day in her work.

The three speakers met through Geek Girl Dinners, a group for women in IT.

The following are the details and dates for the Case Study module 2010/2011.

The format is 5 all-day sessions from 10:00 -17:00 (with a break for lunch) on selected Saturdays, per semester.

As this is a shared module with the IT MSc not every topic will be specifically on KM. However, given that your degree area is Computing, every presentation will have relevance. You are expected to come prepared (prior reading) and engage with the speaker.

The afternoon sessions consists of groupwork analysis and peer-presentations. You will be divided into groups of 4 or 5 and must complete work within the alloted time frame (research & presentation).

You will be sent details of the speaker and topic in advance of each session so you can prepare.

Instalment Option for Part-time Students

In response to student needs, DIT has approved the following instalment option for PART-TIME students paying programme fees totalling €2,000 or more.

Conditions of the policy are as follows:

A two-phase instalment facility will be available to part-time students registering on a programme before the 31st October, where their tuition fee plus the capitation fee amounts to a fee of €2,000 or more.

· The instalment option is available on request only.

· The closing date for instalment requests is 31st October each year and no request will be considered after that date.

· Any student with a balance outstanding from a previous academic session cannot avail of this instalment option.

This policy comes into effect immediately.

Amount of Instalment

· 50% of the tuition fee and 100% of the capitation fee must be paid on registration.

· The first instalment must be a minimum of €1,750 euro.

· The second instalment must be paid no later than 31st January each year.

If a part-time programme commences at any other time of year (eg in January):

· The first instalment must be paid on registration and the second instalment no later than 30th April.

· Applications for the instalment facility for programmes with a January start will not be considered after 28th February and the same conditions as above applies.

Late payment penalties

If a student defaults on a payment the following late payment penalties apply;

· The first instalment payment must be made in full on registration. If the payment is not made the student will not be registered.

· If a student defaults on the second instalment, a late payment penalty of €180 will apply.

· If a student does not pay the second instalment, plus the late charge of €180, by 28th February they will be removed from the register (coded to PN on banner) and they should not attend classes, submit assessments or sit examinations.

· A re-registration fee of €220 will apply to those part-time students who wish to re-register on the programme and complete the year.

Our guest speaker for the next Case Studies session will be Nazar Rasheed, on 6 March, 2010 at 10am in Room KE 3-008.

Nazar has a long career in the IT industry in Ireland and internationally. In 2008, Nazar took a sabbatical to complete an MSc in Healthcare Informatics at Trinity College Dublin. Before this Nazar's previous position was with Norkom Technologies in Dublin.

Nazar's presentation will focus on the practical benefits of IT, Rapid Application Development (RAD) and two real-world, healthcare case studies he was involved with.

Google Wave is an online software application product of Google, described as a personal communication and collaboration tool. It is a web-based service, computing platform, and communications protocol designed to merge e-mail, instant messaging, wikis, and social networking. At the moment, some people still underline its unique opportunities for collaboration, others were disappointed by the buggy experience of the new platform, they could not see the practical use, or felt all alone because their colleagues weren't on it.

Unfair Practice in Assessment - Dublin Institute of Technology Policy

It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the general assessment regulations of the Dublin Institute of Technology and the policy of the Dublin Institute of Technology with regard to plagiarism.

Under these guidelines, plagiarism, along with other forms of academic cheating and falsification, is classed as ‘unfair practice’ and, if detected or suspected by an assessor, is to be formally reported to the Head of School (See the DIT General Assessment Regulations).

It is essential that at Masters level you understand clearly the need to submit your work giving full credit to that of others by referencing correctly. It is not acceptable ever to cut and paste content from any source without citing.

As part of Study Skills on the DIT web site, A guide to Academic Writing and Library Research is now available and you should review it.

A lecturer will not approach you about a suspicion of unfair practice unless they have a lot of evidence and are extremely concerned about it.
You should treat your lecturers with respect in this regard. You will be given an opportunity to explain.

Your 'friends' are not a reliable source of information on any issue of policy or
regulations in the Dublin Institute of Technology.
'My friend said it was ok' is not a valid excuse nor will it result in a waiving of any penalty for an offence.

If you are unsure about what you can and can't do, it is your responsibility to consult the relevant lecturer for clarification.
It is not ok to consult your 'friends'. Your 'friends' will not be paying the penalty - you will.

If you are collaborating with other students on individual assignments you are leaving yourself open to an accusation.
Individual assignments are expected to exactly that - individual. Created by you alone.

The policy of this programme is to prosecute all cases of suspected unfair practice at a panel of enquiry. In general all cases put forward are upheld.
Penalties if found guilty include, but are not limited to, the following:

voiding of any marks for the module concerned - this may mean you will not be able to progress to dissertation as you expected, that on reassessment a maximum possible grade of 40 is available to you in the module and additional fees will be payable;

suspension from the Dublin Institute of Technology for a period with loss of fees paid;

expulsion from the DIT with loss of fees paid

The Dublin Institute of Technology policy is designed to protect the majority of students who would never contemplate unfair practice from the few who try to gain an unfair advantage.

It is important that all students should feel comfortable that they and their classmates are actually earning the grades they achieve.

Any cases of unfair practice on this programme will be reported to the Head of School with requestthat a panel of enquiry be established.

Colin Mooney will be our guest speaker starting at 10am on November 7, 2009. The title of Colin's presentation is:

This presentation has relevance for both IT and KM areas. Colin implemented a KM-oriented project for his organisation's business within an IT framework.

Evening Parking with Q-Park Car parks

DIT have teamed up with QPark to offer a discount on evening time
parking rates for students.
A student evening rate of 2Euro inclusive for parking from 17.00 hrs
till 23.00 is available in all QPark locations across the city.

Q Park have provided each of the DIT colleges with a validator unit,
so students attending evening course can simply validated their car
parking ticket after they have finished class. On returning to the car
park they place their car park ticket into any of the pay stations and
the ticket will allow the special rate of 2.00 euro

For the time being, here's a workaround using a slightly different method:

Click to open the Powerpoint file you wish to download:

Click on "Menu" on the lower, right corner:

Click on the File name:

When the presentation comes up, click on "Actions" then "Download as PPT"

Like I say, if anyone's got a better method, please pass it along.

2009/2010 Registrations - Important

All students should now have completed registration.
If you haven't then you need to ensure that you register before
the end of this week.

From October 12th all communication will be to your DIT email only.

In addition no temporary accounts will be available for you to use
the computing resources.

It is therefore really important that you get registered immediately.

European Conference on Knowledge Management 2009 (ECKM 2009)

The 10^th European Conference on Knowledge Management was held recently in Università Degli Studi Di Padova, Vicenza, Italy.

The programme of the conference covered many areas in which current and past students have completed dissertations which shows that the MSc in Computing (Knowledge Management) is well aligned with the knowledge management community.

A paper based on the work of one student was presented at the conference - congratulations to Dennis Lupiana for his paper Security Awareness : A Knowledge Management Problem which was well received by the conference.

Public Sector Network Conference - MSc in Computing (KM) Graduate Presenting

The Irish Computer Society and the Institute of Public Administration invite you to attend the Annual Public Sector Network Conference which will be held on Wednesday, October 7th at the IPA premises on Lansdowne Road.

The conference will look at areas in which IT can be used more efficiently or could contribute to cutting costs, and showcase best practice in managing and measuring IT investments.The second related focus will be on knowledge management in the public sector. Public sector staff numbers are being cut and many are leaving on early retirement packages. The loss of knowledge is and will have serious implications for organisations. It has drawn attention to the lack of systems to manage, retain and share knowledge in the public sector.

Colman McMahon, a graduate of the MSc in Computing (Knowledge Management), will be presenting at the conference.

News - 2009/2010 Induction and Orientation

The programme will kick-off with a short induction and orientation session on Thursday September 17th 2009.

I'll be in contact will all students in the next few days with more details of location etc and news will be posted here.

Classes will start on Monday September 21st 2009.

Timetables are currently being finalised and will be published as soon as possible. As soon as timetables are finalised I will be in touch with everyone to get details
of the modules they want to take and will set up registration records.

Drupal Event Sat Nov 15th

As part of the Case Studies session, the school of computing will host the
Ireland Drupal Users meeting on Saturday Nov 15th.

Drupal is an open source content management system that is modular, free, stable and standard.

The day will have a number of sessions including hands-on, practical sessions where new users can learn the basics of Drupal and advanced users can learn about more advanced aspects.
